Bag Filter Fan for Tyre Plant Mixing and Carbon Black Handling

Pulls the process gas through the filter bags and discharges the cleaned gas to the stack. In tyre plant mixing and carbon black handling the gas at the fan is air with carbon black dust, and that sets the blade form, the material and the drive.

The process

Carbon black is unloaded, conveyed and weighed into the mixers under extraction, with bag filters on every transfer. The fans sit on the clean side with sealed bearings, because the dust penetrates everything.

The gas at the fan

Carbon black is extremely fine, adhesive and penetrating. The fan is on the clean side of a bag filter, with seals that keep the dust out of bearings and a wheel that can be cleaned.

Selection for this duty

Blade formStraight radial, open or shrouded, so the wheel can be cleaned and does not hold deposit
Material of constructionMild steel
Drive and bearingsDirect coupled or belt driven; belt drive where the duty point may need tuning at site
Also specifiedAccess doors on the scroll and a wheel that can be cleaned in place
Density at the fanAt about 60°C the gas density is close to 1.06 kg/m³, 88% of standard air. Pressure developed and power drawn fall in the same ratio, so the selection is made at this density and the motor is checked at cold start.

Pulls the process gas through the filter bags and discharges the cleaned gas to the stack. Works on the clean side, so the blade can be chosen for efficiency, with the filter pressure drop added to the duty. Client-stated blade types for the Bag Filter Fan in general: Backward curved and radial tipped.

Information needed to select or quote

  1. Duty point. Volume flow and static pressure at the fan inlet, with the gas density and temperature or the conditions to derive it.
  2. Operating conditions. Site altitude, normal operating temperature and continuous or intermittent duty.
  3. Gas stream. Dust loading and particle size, corrosive species, moisture, upset temperature and any tendency of the material to deposit on the impeller.
  4. Mechanical. Rotation viewed from the drive end, discharge orientation and motor power.
