The process
Foundries emit fume at the furnace, sand dust at the shakeout and knock-out, and organic vapour from binders in the moulding and core shop. Each goes to its own collector, with adsorption on activated carbon for the vapour and bag filters for the dust.
The gas at the fan
Fume from arc, induction or reverberatory furnaces, hot and carrying fine metallic oxide dust. Temperature is handled by dilution air or a cooler ahead of the filter, and the fan sits on the clean side where possible.
Selection for this duty
| Construction | Axial fans in weatherproof cowls, or supply and exhaust units with filters as the air quality requires |
| Density at the fan | At about 200°C the gas density is close to 0.75 kg/m³, 62% of standard air. Pressure developed and power drawn fall in the same ratio, so the selection is made at this density and the motor is checked at cold start. |
An axial fan in a weatherproof cowl mounted on an inclined or flat roof, exhausting hot air from the ridge of a factory shed. Client-stated blade types for the Roof Extractor in general: Axial.
